Historic Menard County is located 20 miles northwest of Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln spent his younger days at New Salem where he honed his skills as businessman, community leader, debater, negotiator, lawyer, and politician. Lincoln---in his multiple jobs of land surveyor, legal counsel, and mail deliverer---also traveled through and visited friends in several other communities in Menard County including Athens, Oakford, Petersburg, and historic Sandridge.
You can still feel the presence of Lincoln in the New Salem Village. Which is Located just 2 miles outside of Petersburg, which is the Menard County Seat.
Menard County was formed in 1839 out of Sangamon County. The County was named for Pierre Menard, the first Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.
