The city of Girard is located in northern Macoupin county on Illinois Route 4, also known as the "first alignment" of historic Route 66 from 1926 to 1930. It is situated just 7 miles west of Interstate 55 at mile marker 72. To the north 30 miles is the state capital Springfield, and to the south just 15 miles is the county seat, historic Carlinville.
